The idea of futures betting is one that not only is a ton of fun for sports bettors, but it’s also a way to make a good amount of money by betting on something that won’t have an outcome decided for quite a while down the road. The main reason for this is because of the incredibly good odds that you can get for betting on something like the future winner of an upcoming Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Championship, Stanley Cup Champion, and many other things as well. Regardless of the sport that you like to bet on, more often than not you have an option to bet on which team is going to take down the championship for that season. So while futures betting can pay out well, there is definitely some strategy behind betting on it, and that’s what we’re going to take a look at. So let’s make some money with futures bets!
Anticipating What Teams Will Do in Offseason
If you are looking to place a futures bet before the offseason winds down, then you’ll need to take a good look at what the teams will be doing in things like free agency and also during the draft. If there are glaring holes in a teams roster that need to be fixed before that team becomes a serious contender, but there aren’t many great free agents at that position available, then you might want to avoid betting on that team to get the job done the next season. On the other side of things though if a team is pretty well stacked across the board and is just looking to improve a bit at a position or two then this could be a great spot to put your bet down, because these teams are already proven and are ready to move to the next season with the roster that they have.
Checking the Odds
There are definitely heavy favorites when it comes to futures betting, and choosing a team who only has odds of around +200 may actually not be worth the risk that early. Instead, you may be better off looking for a team who has a ton of upside and could potentially contend, but gives some incredibly strong odds. If you can get a bet on a team who is +1500 or +2000 to win it all, but is a legitimate playoff team then you may be looking at a profitable bet. Don’t forget though, you can also get some great odds to bet on that team to win their conference as well more than likely, and you don’t ONLY have to stick with betting on them to win their championship at the end of the year. Be sure to look at all of the options available to you on the board!
Choosing multiple teams with good odds is always a good idea. For example, if you bet three teams and one has odds of +800, one is +1200 and one is +2000, if you hit any of your bets then you are bringing in a very nice profit off of your original bet. You are getting three of your favorite betting options to win it all as well, and the payout will definitely be worth your time. Just make sure that you aren’t betting on TOO many teams to where winning your bet won’t actually make you the money back, or net you a solid profit either. It’s all about making a nice return on your original bet (return on investment), so make smart bets! Betting on three of the heavy favorites at +200, +400, and +500 probably isn’t the best idea because of the lack of return that you’ll get.
Futures bets are a ton of fun to do, but it’s important to remember why you are getting such great odds. These bets are VERY tough to win, so never get too crazy with betting huge bets or betting on too many futures bets either. Always set yourself to a max that you are willing to put down on a futures bet, as this is a way to use great money management and make sure that you don’t go too big on a single futures bet as well.
